System Science Enhances Communication Skills

I was having a hard time getting my student to engage in a write up following completion of a book he read. He wrote single word answers and showed disinterest in the write up, even though he had enjoyed reading the story very much. I decided to change my approach and created an assignment that incorporated System Science. I presented him with the assignment, Farmer Boy: Identifying Systems.

I gave him a short lecture based on what I learned from the Foundations of Systems course. We then had a discussion identifying and analyzing systems from within the book. He quickly identified numerous systems with ease. He clearly understood the protagonist’s goal, his inputs used for reaching that goal and the disturbances that interfered. During our discussion, he even explained to me the systems within systems. He was able to demonstrate and articulate the knowledge he gained from reading the book.

Afterward, he wrote complete answers to his study questions, identifying systems within the story as well as the different parts of the systems. This lesson boosted his confidence and allowed for him to have a positive and beneficial learning experience. From my personal experience, as well as that of my student, it is notable that learning System Science enhances communication skills. It unlocks language tools that bridge gaps between people from varying backgrounds and educational levels. It proves itself to be a valuable resource.

Kind Regards,

Jill
