Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai was a panelist on Redefining Discovery for the 21st Century  at Partnering for Cures 2015, which was held from November 01-03, 2015 at the Grand Hyatt, New York. Other panelists included. The discussion was moderated by Rudolph Tanzi, Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School; Vice Chair, Neurology Research, Massachusetts General Hospital.

The discussion concentrated on what is required for the discovery enterprise to thrive in the 21st century? Team science and interdisciplinary work with engineers, data scientists, etc. are clearly the wave of the future; how do we fund and organize it effectively? Can we accelerate innovation through productive collisions with thinkers from other fields? What’s the right balance of intuition and serendipity with more goal-directed projects? And how can we create career pathways (inside and outside academia) to motivate young researchers to dedicate themselves to medical research at a time when federal grants for young investigators are increasingly scarce?

Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai said that the time has come to prove wrong the standard narrative that inventions only come out from big institutions.
